SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A card social was held in the Bowling Club pavilion by the Papatoetoe Croquet Club on Saturday afternoon, when the hostesses were Mrs. Brown /and Mrs. Farrand. A five hundred drive /was won by Mrs. Foss and Mr. G. Bunciman. Afternoon tea closed an enjoyable afternoon. . The third of a series of bridge afternoons, in aid of the Mount Eden branch of the Hospital, Auxiliary, was held at the Farmers' tearooms on Wednesday, when Mrs. Howard acted as hostess. Those present were: Mesdames D. Clayton, E. C. Turner, Campbell, Sheldon, W. Gladding, Bich, Stecres, Stewart, G. Campbell, Gallon, Madden, Frith, Cowie, Todd, Percy, and Miss R. Todd. A very delightful morning tea was given yesterday in the lounge of the Lyceum Club by Mrs. David Smith to entertain a number of her friends. The room was gay with gazanias in flame colour, standing in the cream recessess of the mantelpiece, and bright redberried holly over the other fireplace, while the centre was graced with huge brass bowls of blue iris and early yellow daffodils.

The Auckland central evening branch of the W.C.T.U. was held in Unity Buildings on Tuesday, when a large number of women were present. The president, Mrs. Tasker Brown, was in the chair. Items were rendered by Mesdames Burnett and Craig and Miss Bead. The speaker for the evening was Miss K. McLay, on "The Problem of the Feeble-minded, and its Belation to the Liquor Traffic."

A marriage of interest to Auckland residents took place in Sydney recently, when Miss Helen Beid, daughter of Mrs. Beid, of Motutapu, was married to Mr. Oscar Buining, who is purser on the Nieuw Zeeland. They reached Melbourne from Sydney, and took a flat at Eutland Court, St. Kilda Boad. Mr. Buining has many friends in Melbourne, because he has been travelling on- the Eastern route for some years, and he rejoined his ship on July 20.

The Hunt ball, whicli proved such a success'last year, is to take place early in September this year, and will be held at the Peter Pan cabaret. As in last year's function, the members of the Navy who follow the hounds arc taking a very live interest in its success, and what funds are made will'be devoted to giving a farmers' ball and to the finances of the Hunt, which, like all else, have suffered from the depression. This ball starts the week's festivities of hunting. The point-to-point steeplechase takes place on the 10th, and on the 15th the season closes with a meet at "Puhunui," Papatoetoe.

The Mangere East bowling and croquet clubs combined on Tuesday night in a progressive bridge and "500" evening, to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. E. Hodges and Mr. and Mrs. J. Garthorpe, who have been members of the clubs, and who are now leaving the district. Mrs. A. Henwood, president of the croquet club, wished the guests every success on behalf of her club, while the president of the bowling club, Mr. S.W. House, referred to the loss being sustained by the district as well as the clubs. The winners of the bridge prizes were Miss B. Tims and Mr. J. .M. Key, while Mrs. A. Henwood and Mr. A. Newson were the successful "500" players.

A happy time was spent in the Holy Trinity Parish Hall, Otahuhu, last evening. A large attendance of dancers thoroughly enjoyed the programme, which comprised old-time selections, the music being supplied by a good orchestra, while extras were played by Mrs. N. Walters, Miss Pirie and Miss K. Fenton. Two Monte Carlo waltz competitions were held, the successful couple in the first being Mr. F. Tidmarsh and Miss G. Westniore, while the second was won by Mr. J. Arthur and Miss I. Taylor. Bridge was played by the nondancers, the prizes being won by Mr. B. J. Parsons and Mrs. R. Fuller. Among those present were: The Mayoress, Mrs. H. T. Clements, Mesdames T. J. Flood, L. Hubbard, Pirie, :H. C. Fenton, B. J. Parsons, F. Ellery, W. Woods, F. Matthews; R. Fuller,: West, Misses G. The fourth annual dance of the Jfew Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Tuakau factory staff, was very successful. The decorative scheme was parried out with ferns, streamers and trade brands. The chairman of directors, Mh Dynes Fulton, and Mrs. Fulton led the : grand march.

The annual dance held under the auspices of the Putaruru branch' of the women's division of the Farmers' ;Unibn took place on Friday night, in the;Putaruru Town Hall. Visitors were present from all parts of the' district. The hall was decorated With red, white and blue streamers, suspended from the centre'of the hall, across to the stage and corners,. The walls, were fringed with greenery, on which were placed artificial butter?, flies of red. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Bowman and partner. * ,'

The August concert, under the auspices of the Ondhunga branch of the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary, and organised by Mr. S. Adams, was held last night at the Epsom Infirmary. The various items were very much appreciated by the inmates. Mr. Adams' orchestra, under the leadership of 'Mr. Keith Fowler, played several selections, while other instrumental items wera rendered by Misses Thoral Keefe, Joan Kidson, Freda Hunter, Bita Sullivan and Messrs. .Ironsides and Milton Dilworth. Songs were sung by Miss Orchard, Mrs. Davey and Mr. John Kidson, while Mrs. Nicholas and Mr. and Mrs. Stenberg contributed dramatic selections. The accompanists were Miss Fowler and Mesdames Pascoe and Kidson.

A concert and dance was held in the ' Kumeu Hall on Saturday evening under the auspices of the play-reading club of the Women's Institute. The concert ' party travelled from Auckland, their. programme taking the form of a radio! broadcast from KMU. Mr. Jack Mills ! was amusing in the role of station announcer. The programme consisted of piano solos by Miss Marjorie Boberts, «ongs by Miss Edith Whittaker and Mr. J. Parsons, elocutionary items by Miss Noni Wright and Miss Una Moore. Two ! one-act comedies, "Fancy Free," in which I the parts were taken by Messrs. J. Par-' sons and Wallace Smith and Misses j Wright and Moore, and "Women's I Crowning Glory," acted by Misses Edna Craig, M. Boberts, K Whittaker, S. I Best and Mr. Jack Mills, were given. I At the conclusion of the ' programme ' supper was served, after which dancing j was enjoyed.

An enjoyable concert was give .on Monday and Tuesday evenings by the Takapuna Grammar School in the Gaiety Theatre, Takapuna. On both evenings seating accommodation was taxed to its utmost. The programme reflected great credit on those who trained the performers of each item, the Swedish drill of the fifth, form girls being a special favourite with the audience. The entertainment Was greatly assisted by the playing of the school orchestra, under Miss Hinimel. The school songs were conducted by Mrs. Sutherland. Other enjoyable items were: A trumpet solo by D. Bennett; song and dance by D. O'Leary and T. Nettleton, with chorus by fourth form girls; dance, "Lady Moll" by sixth form girls; a Dutch dance by A. Steven-' son, H. Elliott, H. Watts, B. Haden, D. Hill and V. Smith. The one-act play, "Maker of Dreams," was charmingly given by M. Archibald (pierrot), V. McCredio (pierrctte); and J. Goodwin (the manufacturer). The last item was a comedy, "Our Aunt From California." Those taking part were: L. Armitage. P. Hutcliinirs, M, Mowbray, M. Brown, G. Marks, H. Mair, and M. Munro
