CITY COUNCIL SALARIES.
In these days of deflation when the mortgagee compulsorily reduces his interest and the landlord his rates, standing out in stark I relief remains the severity of the rates, which, so far ae the city is concerned, remain practically the same as last year. Why are these rates not brought into line with the other reductions pertaining to land? Is it logical to ask the landlord to reduce the rent 20 per cent or more and expect him to pay the same rates? One way at least in which to ease the burden of ratee is to reduce the salaries of the officials at the Town Hall. Notwithstanding the "cut," these are out of all proportion to the salaries, of the majority of ratepayers. lam bold enough to suggest that such salaries should be cut down by 33 1-3 per cent. After the Mayor of Mount Albert took office he reduced the salaries of the staff with masterly firmness, and it. is a pity. that the Auckland City Council did not take a leaf out of his book. However, it is never too late to start. TAXPAYEK.
