RUGBY FOOTBALL.

AUCKLAND WIN. DEFEAT OF HAWKE'S BAY. A MARGIN OF TWO POINTS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HASTINGS," Saturday. Auckland met Hawke's Bay to-day in bright sunshine, and on a nicely damp ground. In the Hawke's Bay team Ireland replaced Powdrell. Berridge kicked off for Auckland, and after a period, in which the Bay forwards asserted themselves to good effect, play developed into a bright passing rush, in which the Bay backs showed promise of upsetting the prevailing opinion that Auckland would give the Bay few chances of victory. Ten minutes passed before Auckland showed their dash. Then, in one sweeping movement, their .forwards went down the field, for Berridge to pass from the ruck to Millikin, who scored. Heazlewood converted. Auckland 5, Hawke's Bay 0. Auckland gained much ground when Heazlewood took a penalty kick, and Jamieson and Pearson improved the advantage with a spirited dash to within ten yards of the Bay goal, Evans twice being instrumental in keeping the visitors out. Heazlewood initiated a most beautiful movement. Snapping up the ball from the toes of the Bay forwards ten yards from the Auckland goal, he slipped clean through the whole packed defence and passed to Berridge, who, dummying and side-step-ping brilliantly, passed to Finlayson, but Finlayson's pass to Coratliwaite, when five yards from the goal, was absurdly wild. With great dash and brilliance the Bay forwards swept the defence on to their goal line from half-way, an irresistible movement ending when Ireland fell on the ball for a try, which Grant converted. Hawke's Bay 5, Auckland 5. Bay came back, their lovely passing bouts nonplussing Auckland, but they had little luck. Half-time sounded a minute later. The game so far was much in Hawke's Bay's favour. Auckland 5 Hawke's Bay 5 When the second spell opened, Hawke's Bay, for a time, held the advantage, and dominated the scrums. Their forwards were shaping beyond expectations, and several times came within scoring distance, but the luck was not with them. After a prolonged consultation, Drake, who was injured early in the spell, went off, leaving Auckland a man short for the remaining half-hour of the game. Hawke's Bay broke loose from the Auckland twenty-five, Ireland, Smith ' and Satherly handling the ball. Satherly scored, but failed to convert. Hawke's Bay 8, Auckland 5. Auckland's play livened up and Hadley made a brilliant dash almost through. From the ensuing movement Carter scored near the posts and Heazlewood converted. Carter was laid out for some time, but resumed play. There was some crisper play by Auckland in the last few minutes, but they were unable to score. Auckland 10 Hawke's Bay 8 THE WEIiIrINGTONIANS.
