CRUELTY TO DOG.
SWANSON FARMER FINED. George Edward Plane, farmer, Swanson, was charged at the Police Court yesterday, before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., with ill-treating a dog by striking it on the head. Mr. J. J. Hollingworth prosecuted on behalf of the Auckland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The defendant said that the dog had been caught in a rabbit trap, and he struck it over the head with a tea-tree etick to stun it. He did the only humane thing. The inspector said that there were no marks of a rabbit trap on the dog. It was found next day in the ecrub, but on being taken to its owner's place it died. Mr. McKean said that there were other means of taking the dog out of the trap. A garment could have been put over ite head. A fine of £2 10/ and £3 8/3 costs wae imposed.
