HOCKEY VICTORY.
N.Z. Defeats Queensland by Three Goals. RALLY AFTER HALF-TIME. BRISBANE, July 24. The New Zealand hockey team yesterday defeated Queensland by four goals to one. The New Zealand team was as follows:—C. Moore, P. J. Spiers, T. A. Ewan, P. J. Joblin, R. Munro, T. Clark, D. Reid, P. H. Anthony, M. Bay, T. T. Turbitt, F. Wellboiirnc. In the first half the New Zealanders experienced difficulty in working up a combination, but they defended soundly and kept the Queenslanders out well, the home team obtaining only one goal, secured by C. Connie. The second half saw a great rally by the visitors, with Bay doing great work in attack. He soon worked his side into a strong attacking force, which allowed the Queenslanders few chances, and the visitors' defence was always sound. Ewan, Bay and Turbitt were always to the fore in the attack, and Moore was a safe goalie. Ewan and Bay worked an opening and gave a chance to Reid, who equalised the scores. Even play followed with both sides revealing class hockey, but with the N»»\v Zealandera displaying more finished work. Good play by Reid and Turbitt gave New Zealand the lead, the latter's shot finding the net. Then Spiers and Reid beat the defence and fed Turbitt, who put the ball handily for Bay to shoot in. Immediately afterwards Reid baffled the opposition with a crowning goal, the New Zealauders winning by four goals to one.
