GOVERNMENT ATTACKED.

LLOYD GEORGE'S CRITICISM. LONDON, July 13. In the course of Mr. Lloyd George's speech in the House of Commons he referred to the general situation in Britain. Mr. George said the Government claimed, to have balanced the Budget and restored general confidence, but it had not touched the root of the evil. British commerce had fallen flat in 1931. Steps must be taken to build up conditions under which it would be able to recover. At the time of the election a sovereign was worth 20 shillings. Now the Government was taking special measures to keep it at 15/. So much for the wisdom of the pundits and penguins. He did not expect much from the Ottawa Conference, but preferential tariffs would be infinitely better than quotas. "Let us do something for ourselves instead of standing for ever at the doors of foreign offices and conferences, waiting for something to turn up," said Mr. George.
