WORKMEN'S WAGES.
PUBLIC WORKS AND HIGHWAYS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. Unskilled workmen on the public works and main highwayn have been subjected to two reductions in wages during the last three months. Until June 30 they were paid 12/ C per day, less 5 per cent, and from July 1 onwards the rate has been 10/ per day. The Public Works Department advised the Whangarei County Council to-day that future subsidies would be paid on this wage alone. The council decided upon the following new rate of wages: —Surfacemen, 12/6 (previously 13/7); power-grader drivers, 13/6 (15/); bridge foremen, 15/4 (17/). When surfacemen are working on main highways the difference in wages from those subsidised by the Department will be made up by the riding. Several members expressed the opinion that wages would eventually fall to 10/ per day, but the majority considered that the proposed decrease was too big to make immediately. The new rate of 10/ per day will be paid to casual labourers.
