TAMAKI DRAINAGE.
OTAHTJHU EXTENSION. HEALTH OFFICER THANKED. The Otaliulni Borough Council last evening was informocl by the Auckland Harbour Board tliat it approved the engineer's recommendation tlint the Tamaki drainage extension should be sanctioned, subject to minor adjustments which had boon pointed out to the Medical Oflieer of Health, whose approval was also necessary. Mr. F. W. Grey said titer had much to thank Dr. Hughes for, in the very strong way lie hod supported the scheme. There had been some opposition, bnt after all health was more important than a few boats on the river. In connection with the drainage of Tamaki Estate, the health inspector, reporting on a complaint, said there was no flow of sewage on the surface of the ground, although the conditions were not good. There was no odour noticeable, in the daytime. He could only recommend the free use of chloride of lime. To dig another hole would mean the exposure of an amount of filthy soil and the creation of a further nuisance for a while, but this would seem to be the only temporary remedy in sight. It was decided to expedite the starting of the extension to the drainage area.
