Strange Attitude of T.U.C.
Council,
THRIFT SCHEMES ATTACKED,
LONDON, June 9.
A report issued by the Council of the Trades Union Congress condemns all employers' sports and welfare schemes as "exerting an insidious influence which definitely tends to weaken the trades unions."
The council further attacks schemes for co-operation and thrift on the ground that "the more financial interest workers are induced to have in a firm the greater will be their reluctance in any way to endanger the firm's profitmaking activities."
BEER DUTY "CUT." REJECTED BY COMMONS. (Received 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 9. The House of Commons to-day, by 301 votes to 71, rejected an amendment to the Finance Bill, moved by Sir W. Wayland (Con., Canterbury), to reduce the beer duty to 103/ a barrel from the present duty of 134/.
