GISBORNE ECONOMIES.

DEMANDS ON RATEPAYERS. REDUCED BY 20 PER CENT. SAVING OF £14,599 IN TWO YEARS. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") GISBORNE, this day. During the past two years the Gisborne Borough Council lias effected such substantial economies that it has been possible to reduce demands upon the ratepayers by approximately 20 per cent. When the estimates for the current year came before the council for consideration, it was reported that the amount to be rated for would aggregate

£60,828, compared with £61,258 last year, and £75,427 in 1930 a reduction of £14,599 in two years. Approximately £1400 was saved this year as the result of stamp duty on interest, but this was offset by ail increased hospital levy, the further increased hospital levy, the further saving being due to additional economies. The committee's report stated that every avenue of economy had been investigated, but in view of the heavy reductions in preceding years, further retrenchment was impossible.
