Both the lb pound and the £ come from the Roman librae. Originally the sovereign was equivalent to a. pound of silver, but the question of the weight did not arise—it was a. question only of value. To distinguish weight from value, therefore, the initial L of librae with a stroke through it was introduced to symbolise value, while the abbreviated form lb was retained for weight.
