SERVICE FOR FARMERS.
CHARGE AGAINST RAILWAYS. PROPERTY OF THE PEOPLE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A charge that the Railways Department was not considering the needs or convenience of farmers was made before the Transport Appeal Board, when couneel for the appellant declared that the troubles of the railways should not lead to an oversight of the troubles of farmers.
"We know that the railways are the property of the people and must be protected," said counsel, "but it must be remembered that our farmers have their troubles as well as the railyays, their troubles as well as tho railways, should be bolstered up at the expense of the farmers. The farmer has to get back to his farm. tHe has his work to do, and if a service is offered that will permit him to get to town and back again in a day he should be permitted to have it." Mr. Justice Frazer pointed out that there was no question of a monopoly being preserved for the railways. "All you have to do," he said, "is to satisfy us that the service is necessary and desirable in the public interest. The railways have no monopoly."
