FAST STEAMING.

MARIPOSA FROM SYDNEY. EASTWARD CROSSING RECORD. Although she was compelled to reduce speed for several hours when coming down the coast, the Matson liner Mariposa, which arrived at Auckland from Sydney this morning, created a new record for the run. Her steaming time was 2 days, 10 hours, 24 minutes. The JJariposa's schedule is so arranged that she lias to create new times for every stage of her journey in order to arrive up to programme. Her run from Auckland to Sydney was made in 2 days 15 hours, 9 minutes, at an average speed of 20.22 knots. Her average speed returning to Auckland was 19.83 knots. The Mariposa left Sydney at 3 p.m. on Saturday last, and encountered moderate south-west gales for the greater part of the passage. The liner rolled heavily and yesterday a. quantity of crockery was smashed. Thick weather was experienced oil the coast this morning, and for two hours the ship was running at reduced speed. Other Vessels Delayed. The Canadian National steamer Canadian Constructor, which arrived from Halifax yesterday afternoon, encountered a succession of westerly gales when Hearing New Zealand, and her arrival was delayed by two days. The steamer Waipahi, which berthed this morning, was delayed about beveu hours, and the motor ship Ashburton, which is coming from New York, and is due on Friday, reports that she is also encountering adverse conditions.
