LOST, THEN FOUND.
RACE VISITOR'S WALLET. LARGE SUM INVOLVED. A visitor from the King Country in Auckland for the races, Mr. J. W. Ashton, complained to the police on Sunday evening that he had lost, or had been robbed of, a wallet containing £620. Mr. Ashton was sitting in a. room with some friends, when ho suddenly sprang to his feet, exclaiming that he had been robbed. He informed the police that he had drawn about £1000 from the bank at Easter and had carried the money with him. When he reached Auckland he had almost £000, and ho had won further money at the races. He usually carried his money in a. wallet in an inside coat pocket, and seldom touched it. Early yesterday morning the wallet was found in Morrin Street, Ellerslie by two youths employed in a racing stable, F. McGovern and N. Voitre. They wers walking along the Outside of the racecourse grounds when they saw the wallet lying on the footpath. This spot was only a quarter of a mile away from the house where Mr. Ashton was ingIt was thought that the thief purposely discarded the wallet after extracting £5 notes, leaving twelve £50 notes which would be difficult to cash. Each of the finders was rewarded with £5.
