Amateur Record by N.Z. Rhodes Scholar. QUICKEST LAP EVER DONE. LONDON, May 26. J. Lovelock, of New Zealand, representing Oxford University in a match against an Amateur Athletic Association team, won the mile race in 4.12, a. British amateur record.

The New Zealander beat Thomas' last year's record. Ho ran the first quartermile in 575, frantically urging his pacemaker to greater efforts, and covered the final quarter-mile alone in 595.

Thus Lovelock ran half the distance in I.sG—unprecedented for a mile race — compared with Ladoumergue'fi best lap of 2.2, when he made the world's record of 4.9 1-5. Council Considering. Mr. Auetad, chairman of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, states that the question of including Lovelock in the New Zealand team for Olympia is under consideration. A decision will be given early next week.

Lovelock was a Rhodes scholar last year and is an old boy of the Timuru Boys' High School. On leaving the seeondary school he went Co Otago University.
