AUCKLAND TRAM FARES.
It was interesting to read of the Government's apparent sudden decision to return to penny postage. Why this decision? It is quite obvious to all thinking people that the increased postage was an illusion, and only imaginary, as a revenue provider. Likewise, with our tram system. It would appear that the powers that be are inclined to again raise the flares, rather than cut down glaring overhead and unnecessary expenses, expenses that are a continuous irritant to the meekest individual. An increase in the tram fares would surely prove imaginary, for it would only help to increase the very large fleet of cheap-rate taxis that are now operating to the. disadvantage of the trams, hence much potential tram revenue would pass on to these taxis. Taxis would increa.se and tram revenue decrease, and it will be difficult to retrieve the lost business or revenue. It behoves members of the Tramways Board to give this matter very deep and serious consideration. An increase, I say, would prove a misjudged action. A.B.
