COST OF MATERIALS. FARMERS URGE IXQURIES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ASHEURTON", Friday. The Mid-Canterbury conference of the Farmers' Union, after hearing an address ■by Mr. Strachan, headmaeter of the Rangiora High School, cm potential markets in the East, decided to suggest to the -meat, dairy and fruit boards that eome of their reserves be used in inquiring into the possibilities of trade with the East as a poesible outlet for surplue produce. It was decided to protest against the increased duty cm Canadian farm implements and also to request the GovernTiient to inquire into the cost of manufacture of binder twine from New Zealand "flax fibre, ascertain the cost of manufacture of woollen yarns and al\> ascertain the reason for the high cost of petrol and lubricating oils. Mr. W. H. Hammond was elected, president.
