DEBATING EVENING. ATHENAEUM CUP TEAM CHOSEN. The team to represent the Leys Literary and Debating Club to contest the Athenaeum Cup was announced last night by Mr. L. Phillips, selector. It comprises Messrs. K. L. Slyfield (leader), J. G. Ken'iierley and G. Grant.
The subject for debate with a Y.M.C.A. team at the institute last night was "That environment is the greatest factor in the moulding of character." The visitors took the affirmative. Summing up, the judge, Mr. F. G. Brookbanksj awarded the Y.M.C.A. team 221 points and the home team 209 points. Messrs. R. W. Miller (leader), F. J. Jansen and C. E. Jull spoke for the visitors, and Messrs. J. C. Black (leader), I?. J. Hughes and J. G. Hamilton for the institute.
The contest for the Athenaeum Cup, rectytnised in the past as the blue riband for debating, will be divided into two sections this year. For the initial year entries are numerically encouraging. Section 1 comprises teams from the \Vorkers' Educational Association, Marist Old Boys. Papatoetoe Debating Club, Business Efficiency Institute and Ley 3 Institute Debating Club. Section 2 is comprised of teams representing the Forensic Club, Y.M.C.A. Junior Chamber of Commerce, Teachers' Training College and the St. John's Training College. ]t is proposed that the final contest between section winners should be broadcast.
