SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

The meeting of the Henderson branch of the League of Mothers' was held last night, when Mrs. "W. C. Williams occupied the chair. The Rev. Mr. Jordan, minister of the Henderson Methodist Church, gave an address on "The Christian Training of the Child," and emphasised many vital points to be considered by the parents. Mrs. Meiklejohn and Mrs. Osborne provided afternoon tea.

The Women's National Reserve held its bi-monthly meeting this week, when general business was dealt with. It was decided to purchase several small articles of furniture for the mothers' rest room in Karangahape Road. Members brought supplies of warm garments for several children under the care of the society. It was decided to hold a bridge, "500" and mah jong afternoon towards the end of June to raise funds for the work of the society.

The Ladies' Social League of the Papatoetoe Methodist Church held an "At Home" in the Methodist Hall, Papatoetoe, yesterday afternoon. The Rev. A. CaiT was in charge of the programme. Items were given by Mrs. Woods, Miss D. Rippon and Mr. Simmers (songs), Miss T. Halpin (pianoforte solos), Miss M. Martin (elocutionary items), and Rev. Ca-rr (violin solos). A 561b marrow was displayed in the produce stall. There were also fancy work, cake and sweet stalls.

Mr. and Mrs. Edward New, of Calliope Road, Stanley Bay, gave a dance last evening to open their new ballroom. The decorations were attractive in quaint shaped lighting effects, and corners filled with palms and pot plants. The supper room was arranged with early winter blooms, and excellent music of the latest airs was supplied. Mrs. ]\ T ew received the guests in a gown of ecru lace. Among those present were: Mesdames Osmers, Smith, Parker, Eaton, Hooker, S. Bates, Pollard, Misses E. Dance, Lacey, Smith and R. Prideaux.

A pleasant time was spent in the Parish Hall, Otahuhu, last Tuesday evening, when the Holy Trinity Social Club held a very enjoyable dance. The prbgramme included two Monte Carlo waltz competitions, the first being won by Mr. G. Stanford and Miss Jean Payne, while the second was won by Miss E. Webber and Miss Jessie Webber. A bridge and 500 tournament was also held, Mrs. D. Hickson and Mr. H. J. Fearnley winning the bridge, while Miss L. Dando won the 500 prize.

There was a good attendance at the Papatoetoe relief workers' dance, which was held in the Renown Hall last evening. Extras were played by Mrs. W. H Barker, Miss R. Houndlow and Mr! L •Tones. Items were given by Miss A Dulihanty, Mr. Hoskins and Mr. C. Mann! Those on the ladies' committee were Mesdames C. Newcombe, J. White and W. Postlewaight. The Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Miss Miller and Mr L. Jones, Mrs. P. Kiddell and Mr. T Wouldes. x * * * .

As a wind-up of the Suburban Tennis Association's season, the combined clubs Edendale, Avondale, Tiro Tiro and Euston, held a social evening on Wednesday in the St. George's Hall, Kingsland In spite of inclement weather there was a fair attendance, the evening bein" spent in present day and old-time dancinn- to excellent music. During the evenin" Mr. Laycock, in very suitable words presented the trophies. He explained that as the season ended in a draw between Edendale, Avondale and Tiro Tiro, it was decided to award the cup to Edendale, the winner of the most number of games for the season. To each of the three clubs a pennant, with the names embroidered in gold, was presented in recognition of the splendid Hlfc. li<»lit put up. IL,

The popularity of the first Glen EdenHenderson Scout dances overcame the gale on Wednesday, May 25, and despite the weather a very enjoyable evening was spent in the Anglican Hall by the many present. The chairman, Mr. John Edwards, welcomed Mr. A. Allen, the newly-appointed Scoutmaster, who has taken over the troop in place of Mr. E. Hockon, who resigned.

There was a good attendance of members and friends at the open evening held' by the dramatic circle of the Lyceum Club when two excellent one-act [ plays were presented by the committee. The first, entitled "The Spartan Girl," was an amusing parody on a Greek play, and the parts were well taken by Misses Anita Webster, Joan Craig, Messrs. Hamish Henderson, Reeves Pilkington, Campbell Laurie and Ron Bowie. A very suitable Greek chorus was comprised of Misses Audrey Alison, .loan Caughey, Betty Wilson and Bunty Johnston. The second "Woman's Crowning Glory," was a modern one-act play, and the parts were cleverly taken by Mesdames Estelle Verran, F. Hobday and Sinel, Miss Edna Craig and Mr. Jack Mills. At the beginning of the performance and during the intervals, selections were played toy an orchestra arranged by Miss Kent.

A successful bridge party was given in the Women's Catholic League rooms, Customs Street, last evening, to gather funds for the supper of the charity ball which takes place next month. Large bowls of mauve and pink hydrangeas, with pale lemon flowers gave a decorated air to the club rooms. The conveners were: Mrs. Emmett Kelly, Mrs. O. O'Neil and Miss Ella Brown. The hostesses for the tables were: Mesdames Reid, Pilling, A. Hanson, H. Maguire, B. Little, N. Sneddon, K. Sneddon, L. S. Kelly, Beattie, C. Stitchbury, J. Geary, W. Kemble, J. Alderson, E. Bain, Cairns, Kalaugher, M. Main, Heath, Preest, C. Clark, Cliff Clarke, J. Coleman, Gutheridge, Sheehan, J. Cotter, Boylan, W. Beddoe, W. Robertson, Black; Misses E. Brown, Stewart, A. Fauhy, K. and M. Wright, Halpin, Bona Kellv, Fogertv, E. Brodie, L. Harris, Hall* Ryan, G. Letton and Magee.
