FARMERS' PLIGHT.
DIFFICULT TO CARRY ON. HEROIC COURAGE SHOWN. LESSONS OF THE SLUMP. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) DUNEDIN, this day. The Otago Farmers' Union annual report states that in many cases to-day the farmer's savings of a lifetime are disappearing rapidly, or he is only carrying on by the forbearance of his mortgagee or landlord, or by protection afforded him by the Mortgagors' Relief Act.
"Even with this greatly -appreciated relief, and after drastically cutting down all personal expenditure and literally 'living on the smell of an oily rag,'' the report states, "many farmers to-day cannot see any daylyrht ahead, and tliidespite the fact that many of those sailH' men are farming upon the most scientific and economic principles.
"The slump has brought to light instances of heroic courage in face f adversity, instances of wonderful kiwi liness and unselfishness, and perhaps '
has taught us all that mere rnaki" money is not everything. When t' slump passes, as it assuredly will, <1 let us remember the lessons it has taujl) us."
