UNEMPLOYMENT CAMPS.

BOOTS AND CLOTHES NEEDED APPEAL FOR CASH FUND. HOBSON STREET DEPOT'S WORK. It was learned from a report made to the Auckland Metropolitan Unemployment Reliof Committee by the officer-in-charge of the Hobson Street depot that there are 1279 men in the various unemployment camps, and SSI have been fitted out with boots and clothing. This leaves G9S to whom nothing has been sent from the depot. It is understood that some have been provided for by their own local organisations, but there are many who have not been supplied with the necessary clothing. Tho average cash cost of fitting out each man was 14/1, nnd with tho goods supplied from tho depot such as a blanket, trousers, boots and a shirt, tho average amount of expenditure per man is about £1. Over £2000 Needed. Tho Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, said at the weekly meeting of the committee yesterday that plans were being completed for an appeal for cash donations, co enable the committee's depot to function fullv. He said they would need from £2000 to £3000. The Mayor said that probably from £S to £12 would come in weekly from the community singing and there was £71 in the hands of the St. John Ambulance Association. Othor sources of revenue proposed included picture shows and a bridge party in the Town Hall. The committee would need at least £700 to equip the men already in camp. To obtain that sum several proposals were being discussed and it was confidently anticipated that they would bear fruit. It was hoped that by all the means contemplated a considerable sum would bo raised in the near future. Organisations Thanked. Mr. Hutchison snid the committee would like to thank the following organisations for help given:—Victoria League, Women's Christian Temperance Union (Koliiinarama branch), League of Remembrance, Tamaki Women's Welware Committee, and groups of ladies at Remuera and at Epsom. The question of making a clotlics "drive" had been discussed and it was considered that it was not advisable at present, as it was thought that it was better to have a steady stream coming in.
