RELIEF WORK ALLOCATIONS.

GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE. REPLY TO NORTHCOTE COUNCIL. . Intimation was received, at the meeting of the Northcoto Borough Council last evening that its resolution, urging the Government to increase the number of days allocated to unemployed at the rate of 12/G per day, had received the backing of the Devonport, Takapuna and Birkenhead Borough Councils. A reply from the Minister of Employment stated that the whole of tlio amount to bo raised by means of the increased unemployment taxation would be expended and every effort would bo made to see that this was done as equitably as possible. The whole question was still under consideration. Rationing of Work. The Mayor said the certifying officer of unemployment was not required to give any details of rationing, so he had himself gone into the matter fully. After an examination of the pay sheets for the past four months, ho could say without hesitation that the money had been disbursed in a very conscientious manner, in strict accordance with the instructions of the Unemployment Board, which were that the most necessitous cases, i.e., the large family man, should receive the more favoured treatment where any such treatment was possible. Tho local ■unemployed association had been a good deal concerned with the respective Auckland and Northcoto allocations, 6aid Mr. Martin, but ho had ascertained that there had been no injustice done to Northcote. Comparisons with the permanently rationed allowance of tho relief worker in the city showed that in many cases tho local man received a much higher average wage. In ono week the excess averaged 5/7 and in another 4/8 per man of the B and C classes.
