THE PRICE OF COAL.

The coal mine owners have just redueedthe price of coal to 48/ a ton by the sack. Thirty years ago, when the purchasing power of money was higher than it is to-day, the price of this commodity delivered to our suburban homes was 24/ per ton for first-class quality household coal. A recent prospectus of a coal and oil development company gives the price of coal f.o.b. Westport, firom the promoters' own estimate, as 9/0 per ton; we are informed locally that the price at the pithead in the North Island is 28/ a ton. Why these discrepancies and excessive margins of profit! THE CARBON KIDS.
