SCHNEIDER CUP ENGINES.
The details of the R-type Rolls-Royce engines, used in the last Schneider Cup contest machines, have recently been made public. The engine is a supercharged water-cooled V typo with twelve cylinders of Gin bore by C.Cin stroke. The normal speed is 3200 r.p.m., and capable of an increase to 3000 r.p.m. During the tests at Derby prior to the Schneider Trophy ail engine completed the hour endurance test developing 2350 b.li.p.—all for a total weight of 10301b, or lloz per b.li.p., or, again, nearly 200 b.li.p. for each cylinder. On the "pints per b.li.p." basis the consumption of special fuel is remarkably low, but because of the phenomenal power developed the engine consumed spirit at the rate of about three gallons a minute. That is to say, quicker than one can empty a two-gallon tin into the tank of an ordinary car!
