STABLE AND TRACK NOTES.

NOT VERY BIG. Miladi is not very big, but she has some pace. She was a starter in the Flying Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday and, ■ after being third practically all the way, finished in that position. This was her ■ first defeat in her last five starts. j CAN JUMP WELL. \ Royal Visitor was always a fair way i back for well over a mile in the Maiden i Hurdles at Te Rapa on Saturday, but he i finished on into fourth position. This ] horse had not raced for some time, but he ( can jump all right. Last season he was ; placed in a hurdle race at Avondale and I in a steeplechase at the Taumarunui meet- < ing held at Ellerslie. A FAIR SHOWING. Appledore made a fair showing for a ] novice over hurdles at Te Rapa on Satur- < day. He was never very prominent, and i though he jumped carefully he showed j quite a lot of promise. He is engaged at 1 Ellerslie, but is meeting some much more ' experienced horses in the Penrose Hurdles 1 than he was pitted against on Saturday, i He lias been showing good form on the i flat in the south recently. I IN THE CORNWALL. ; Little Doubt won well at Wanganui, j which was his third outing for some time, and in consequence he was installed a good favourite for the Winter Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday. He was never further back than third, and half-way 1 down the straight headed Good Idea, to : win nicely. Little Doubt is a very fit ' horse at present, and as he is partial to soft ground will have plenty of friends for 1 liis engagements at Ellerslie. 1 AN UNLIKELY STARTER. As the result of striking himself during a gallop last week Puriri Park is displaying signs of soreness, and he is a doubtful starter at the Great Northern meeting next month. The Treclare gelding has been a good stake winner this season, being one of the most improved horses seen out at headquarters during the present term. He is not too partial to heavy going, but if wintered well is likely to be a better horse next season, and has fully earned a spell. HIGH COMMISSIONER IMPRESSES. High Commissioner impressed by the manner in which he finished on in a hurdle race at the Waikato meeting in February last. He was fourth when the post was reached on that occasion. On Saturday High Commissioner was a starter in the Maiden Hurdles at Te Rapa and ran up second to Paddon about halt a mile from home. At the last fence he jumped better than Paddon and was in front when they landed, but Paddon proved too good for him on the flat. High Commissioner is a promising sort and ehould xaoe -well-at Ellerslie,

WILL BENEFIT HIM. Prince Lu had his first race over hurdles for a considerable time when he contested the Open Hurdles at Te Rapa 011 Saturday, lie was lying about sixth until half the distance had been covered, but he then faded out and was one of the last to finish. The race should improve him for his Ellerslie engagements. LOOKING WELL. High Pitch is looking pretty well for his Great Northern engagements, and though he has not done much racing recently lie appears as though he has not been idle, and it should not take long to get him into proper racing shape. He was a starter in the Open Hurdles at Te Rapa ou Saturday and finished fifth, and he should do much better before long. WILL IMPROVE. Leitrim made his first appearance as a hurdler at the Waikato meeting 011 Saturday. He screwed rather badly at some of his fences, but was in the picture till about half a mile from home, whera he lost his position and finished well back. With a few more hurdle races Leitiim should improve a good deal. He has only to jump right to be troublesome. BAD LUCK FOR CONNECTIONS. Few horses at Ellerslie have been doing bettor than Catonia during the past month and it is bad luck for his connections to have him put out of action so close to the big meeting at Ellerslie. He is 011 the mend again, but the halt in his preparation at this stage may prevent liini fulfilling his engagement in the Cornwall Handicap, in which event he was cxpected to put up a good showing. AN IMPROVED HACK. The Kilbroney filly Mahkill is shaping much better than formerly in her track work and will bo an improved galloper the next time she appears in public. She has built lip into a solid-looking filly, and. having plenty of size, should be well suited under welter weights during the waiter months. Mahkill has previously shown useful form in minor events, and when she has had more experience should be capable of paying her way in hack company.. RAN WELL. Good Idea ran a surprisingly good race in the Winter Handicap at Te Rapa on Saturday. She hit the front along the back and held her position till the straight, where Little Doubt moved up to her, and only beat lier by half a length at the finish. Good Idea stayed on well, and as she can handle soft going may make her presence felt at Ellerslie, though it may be a bit too much to expect her to wiii the Cornwall Handicap. CHROMADYNE DISAPPOINTS. Chromadyne, after his easy victory at Ellerslie in the autumn, was expected to show up in the Flying Handicap at J c Rapa 011 Saturday, and he was made a staunch favourite for the event. However, after lving third to Tradesman and King Ford as they turned for home he failed to go on, and was beaten into fifth position at the finish. This "was his first since lie won at Ellerslie, so lie might go better at the Great Northern meeting,

may do well later. Egyptian King, a chestnut gelding by ' King Nassau from Sphinx, has done well during the short time he has been working under R. W« Lewis' care at iilleislic. . Though still very much on the green side, - this half-brother to Mia Bella is a big powerful-looking gelding, and just the ' right type .to develop into a useful crosscountry performer later on. He has been ■ entered for the Carbine Plate, and may be given a run in that event to gain expellence. . RATHER UNLUCKY. Lucess looked well when he went out to contest the Waikato Steeplechase. He ' was lying in behind Landmark and blurap ' three fences from home and looked as though he would be the hardest to beat, when he hit the obstacle and was nearly I down. He picked himself up cleverly, but the mistake spoiled his chances, and he : had to be content with third place. Only ' for the mishap he would just have about won. Lucess should go well in his engagcj ments at Ellerslie. , SADDLE SLIPPED. i Eager Rose ran a good race under difficulties in the Winter Handicap at ie 1 Rapa on Saturday. She was always pro- " minent, being the leader along the back, , but Good Idea, headed her before crossing ' the top, and Little Doubt was also in front of her when the straight was reached, but she finished on to get fourth. Her saddle slipped during the race and her rider, in consequence, was not of much ' use to her. Only for that mishap she would have been a great deal harder to beat. : RETURNING TO FORM. • True Blood has proved himself a good ' horse, and though he had not raced for ' some time previous to contesting the Winter Handicap at To Rapa on Saturday he looked in much better racing condition than he did when previously seen out. True Blood showed that he was approaeh- • ing his best again, for, after lying aocut i fifth all the way, lie finished on well in ! the straight to get third, three lengths s behind the winner. True Blood won the i Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie >*.ars i ago, and. going on to Trentham, aI P I the Parliamentary Handicap. He is not ■ engaged at" the Great Northern meeting. A CLEVER JUMPER. Landmark fell at Egmont when having t his first rim over steeples, but, witn the - exception of one mistake m the Waikato I Steeplechase at Te Rapa on Saturday, he I jumped well and won nicely.. V"® : fence at the top of the straight the first > time round and lost a bit of ground, but i his pace on the flat soon allowed him to . make up his leeway, and he looked t.ie ■ winner a long way from home, for lie was going so well and jumping so clcvcily. Landmark will make his next appearance at the Great Northern meeting, and he will go well in any jumping event he ■ takes on. ' WON FIRST START. ! Paddon was reported to be schooling , well at Avondale prior to the \\ aikato meeting on Saturday, but as this was liie I first appearance in a jumping event he was not a great deal fancied. He, however, ' showed that he lacked little in regard to fencing, for he was in front seven furlongs from home, and stayed there practically all the way. High Commissioner headed him at the last hurdle, but in the run to ? the judge Paddon stayed on too well for g him. Paddon was a good horse on the il flat, particularly in heavy ground, and now t that he has shown that he can jump well a it is only a question of him remaining e sound to win good hurdle races. Paddon t should be greatly improved as the result e of his experience. if e GOES WELL IN THE WINTER. Last winter King Ford raced well at Te Awamutu, where he won a double, and, coming on to Auckland, looked the winner ie of the Jervois Handicap half-way down the a straight, but tired, and failed to get into in the money. On the second day, however, ie he won the Ranfurly Handicap. King >n Ford had a race at Te Arolia and another cr at Ellerslie at Easter, which have been his id only two outings for some weeks. He was a produced in the Flying Handicap at Te lie Rapa on Saturday, and Tradesman was in the only; one to head him off at any stage an of the journey. King Ford goes well in ?h soft ground and he should be in good ad order for his engagements at the Great Northern meeting.

HAS A CHANCE. Luminary won tlie Brighton Hurdle Race, two miles, at Ellerslic, and lie will have a chance in the, Great Northern Hurdles if he stands up to his work in the meantime. At Te Rapa on Saturday lie was going along nicely aj the finish in third position. A USEFUL SPRINTER. Tradesman is a very useful sprinter and he races well when fresh. At To Rapa on Saturday he was not greatly fancied, but hit the front soon after the start and was one of the leaders all the way, stalling oil King Ford to win by a neck. Tradesman lias engagements at Ellerslic. RUN WILL IMPROVE HIM. Historic has not done much racing recently, but he looked well when produced in the Flying Handicap at I e Rapa on Saturday. He was never near the leaders, but the outing should do lull'* a deal of good and he should be well forward for his Ellerslic engagements next month. NOT TOO SOUND. Pcnnyplain is not a sound horse, and his owner was rather doubtful whether he would see out the Open .Hurdles at 1 c Rapa on Saturday. Ho did so all right, though he was never very prominent. He looks bright enough, and if all goee well in the meantime he will I'Q. brought to Ellerslie for the Great Northern meeting. WON EASILY. Cruaelian made 110 race of the Open Hurdles at Te Rapa 011 Saturday. He was always one of the leaders and wont away from' the field five furlongs from home, to score by four lengths. '! his horse took his fences in fine style and he should be in the limelight at the Great Northern meeting. He has plenty of pace and can stick on well. DID NOT IMPRESS. Claremore did not jump too well at Te Rapa and he will have to improve a good deal 011 his performance in the 'Waikat.Steeplechase to have a chance in the Great Northern Steeplechase. He had lad enough five furlongs from home and finished last. It was stated that he had been off his feed for a day or two last week, and that may have affected linn. VERY SPEEDY. Imamint won well over a mile at the last Avoiuiale meeting with 9.4, and was in at the minimum (8.0) in the Horotiu Handicap at Te Rapa 011 Saturday, f-jhe was soon well clear, and stayed there to the finish, winning comfortably. Imamint has plenty of speed, and as she likes the going 011 the soft side she should race well at Ellerslic next month. GOOD JUMPING DISPLAY. Advance Camp is engaged at Ellersjie and he should soon pick up a stake. He had not raced for some time prior to contesting the Open Hurdles at Te Rapa on Saturdav, but lie gave a good display of jumping throughout, always being one of the pacemakcrs, and only being beaten by the more seasoned Cruaelian at the finish. ■\dvance Camp will have lO be reckoned with in the Great Northern Hurdles. WILL DO BETTER. Slump was stated to have been very unlucky in not winning the Grandstand Steeplechase at Wanganui recently, being well in front at the last fence when he fell. On Saturday, in the Waikato Steeplechase, he gave a good exhibition ot jumping, being one of the leaders all the wa>, and it was only Landmark's superior pace 011 the flat that brought about his defeat. Slump looks" a good proposition 111 minor steeplechases this season when the company is not too select. A GOOD HACK. Woodful is a good sort of a hack, and one that will be seen to further advantage before the season is through He has ■ raced consistently since he made his first appearance at the Matamata meeting last ' February, when he won. On Saturday he was well supported for the Whitiora Handicap at Te Rapa and, after waiting 011 ' the leader till the straight, took charge, to [ score easily. Woodful is engaged at the , Great Northern meeting.
