NATIONAL COUNCIL.
The annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women was held last evening, when the president, Mies E. Melville, presided over a large attendance. The report, presented by the secretary, Miss Quayle, stated that there were 47 societies affiliated with the council, and the number of delegates was 89. The associate membership was (34. Various activities were detailed and among the sub-com-mittees which had been set up during tho year were ones to investigate the question of free birth control clinics and tho anti-crusade; the question of women police and the trainin"- of social workers and the re-arous-ing of interest in matters pertaining to citfic and national life. A large number of remits had been dealt with, and of tho deputations, one had waited upon the Minister of Labour, urging the Government to make provision for unemployed girls and women. Another deputation had waited upon the Hospital Board asking that_ a woman inspector be appointed to assistin dealing with cases of female andfamily destitution. Tile balance-sheet presented by the treasurer, Mrs. McNair, stated that in the general account there was a balance of £43 7/2; in the furniture and room account, a balance of £55 13/5; and £17 10/9 had been paid into the Mayor's unemployment fund for women and girls. The report and balnnce-sheet Were adopted. The following resolution was adopted: "That an expression of keen interest in the Ottawa Conference be sent to the Prime Minister With the hope that it may result in increased prosperity to the Empire." It was decided that the resolution be sent to the Dominion secretary to be forwarded to the different branches for their endorsement and then sent to the Prime Minister. In commenting on the year's work, Miss Melville expressed appreciation of the work of the delegates. The attendance had been excelFent and although many had felt the strain of the difficult times through which the country was passing, they had not allowed it to dampen their interest in council work. The election of officers resulted as follows: Miss Melville, reelected president unopposed; vice-presi-dents, Mesdames A. D. Campbell, Kaspar, the Rev. Wilna Constable, Misses Newton, Jackson, Quayle; Dominion committee. Mins Melville, Mesdames McNair, A. D. Campbell, A. Kidd, Misses Carnachan, Flatt, Newton, Jackson and Mother Hannah. Appreciation was expressed of the work of the retiring secretary, Miss Quayle. Mrs. McNair was appointed to fiil her place, and Miss Ba<rot that of treasurer in place of Mrs. McNair.
