Tlio Governor-General nncl the Lady Blcdisloe propose to give at Government House, Auckland, on or about June 22, a dance confined to young people, at which a limited number of debutantes will be presented to their Excellencies in accordance with an old-established annual custom. Applications for presentation, which in each case should be made as soon as possible by the mother or other near relative of tho prospective debutante, should be addressed to the Aide-de-camp in Waiting, Government House, Auckland. * * • * A garden party in honour of Mrs. Fausett was held at the residence of Mrs. W. E. Franklin (Walton). Mrs. Franklin and Mrs. J. S. Dickey were joint hostesses, and entertained about forty guests at tennis and various competitions. » • » • A meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in St. John's Hall on Thursday afternoon. Miss Read presided. Major Gordon gave a talk on "Practical Christianity." Letters were received from the Prime Minister re protests sent from the union against tho cutting of salaries and pensions. • • • • 1 A welcome home to Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Fitzgerald, Matamata, was given by friends. Dancing to music played by Mesdames T. Cotter, W. Malligan, Misses P. Whitworth, K. Darragh, M. Leadbeater, Messrs. H. E. Schofiekl and R. White was enjoyed by the younger folk, while others played cards. Preceding supper, Mr. J. Pohlen, on behalf of those present, presented them with a fine oak clock and an Egyptian vase. » * » * The Te Atatu branch of the League of Mothers held a meeting in the Methodist Church, when Mrs. Illingworth presided. After the business was completed the members took as their subject "An ordinary day in an ordinary woman's life," and many useful hints and recipes were given, cach member taking a part in the discussion. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Semadini and Chadwick. * * * * Tho Mount Albert branch of the League of Mothers met in the Presbyterian Hall, Mount Albert Road, last Thursday. Mrs. Turner, sen., presided. Mrs. Laird was tho speaker for the day, and Mrs. Richards sang, accompanied by Mrs. W. Browne. A competition was won by Mesdames Hutchinson and Keane. Afternoon tea was served by the tea committee for the day, with Mrs. Miller as convener. * * • • A morning tea was given on Saturday in the Tudor Tearoom by Miss Noni Wright in honour of her cousin, Miss Mane Jones,-of Sydney, who is visiting her home town. The hostess received her guests in a ciel blue ensemble and fur coat, while the guest of honour wore a royal blue tailored coat and hat to tone. There were present: Mesdames T. Jensen and M. Rainger, Misses Una Moore, Althca Parker, Vera Derham, Darrie Heather, Joan Hudson, Norah Friedlander. i Tho Grey Lynn branch of the New Zealand Labour party held a children'., fancy dress dance in the Masonic Hall, Belgium Street, when about 100 children were present in fancy dress. 1< ancy dancing given by Miss Bercsford s and Miss McAneaney's pupils was much appreciated. Miss Betty Budde was the recipient of many kitchen, linen and handkerchief parties during last week, the hostesses including Misses J. Wallace, G. Frater, B. Mayer, P. Ford and Gwcn Kingston. There was a record attendance of 50 couples at an old-time dance held in the Kingsford Hall, Otahuhu, -last Satuiday evening. The hall was beautifully decorated with streamers in shades of blue and gold, and a happy time was spent in dancing to the popular old-time selections. Extras were played by Mrs. R. Edelstein and Miss Phyllis Webber. Two Monte Carlo waltz competitions were on the programme, the first being won by Mr. L. Daley and Miss E. Nobbs, while the winners of the second were Mr. C. Webster and Miss C. Daley. # » * • A concert party from Avondale, under the auspices of the Salvation Array Band, travelled to Kumcu on Saturday evening, and rendered an excellent programme of music and elocutionary items The band, under the conductorship of Bandmaster Asliton, played several numbers, including sacred music, which were applauded by tho audience. Vocal items were rendered by Captain .T. and Mrs. Andrews, violin solos by Miss O. Thwaitos, and elocution numbers by MiSs Porritt, and an exhibition of club swinging by Mrs. Andrews. Several instrumental solos by members of the band were also rendered. The programme arrangements were in charge of Staff Captain Hayes, of Auckland. # » • • A successful social evening and dance was held by the Mangapiko Tennis Club on Friday evening. The club's president, Mr. W. Bent, outlined tho club's activities during the past season, and thanked those who had given such able support. Trophies won during the past season were presented as follow: —Ladies' singles, Miss M. Alexander; ladies' doubles, Miss A. Ellis and Miss M. Alexander; men's singles, Sir. L. Mills; men's doubles, Messrs. L. anal S. Mills; combined doubles, Miss F. Alexander and Mr. A. Coster. Items were given by the following:—Elocution, Miss Winthrop (Auckland); pianoforte duct, Mrs. Cutforth and Miss Fitness. Dance extras were played by Mr. H. Bent and Mr. R. Martin. * * • • Miss Dene Plummcr, of City Road, was hoste&s at her home yesterday afternoon when Miss Betty Buddie, of Takapuna, was the guest of honour prior to her marriage. The rooms were gay with French marigolds and yellow chrysanthemums. The hostess wore an olive green soft satin. Miss Wilma Plunimer, assisted her sister, wearing a flowered ninon. A large basket was placed in the lounge, where each had placed a jar of preserves to start the new larder. Among those present were: Misses Betty and Pat Buddie, Gwen Kingston, Peggy Ford, Wilma Frater, Joan Robertson, Janet Wallace, Billy Mayer, Rae Thomson, Marie Jones, Audrey Alison, Marjorio Dryden and Winsome Airey. * » • • A social evening was held in the Homai Methodist Mission Hall last week, in honour of Mr. D. Whitburn, who recently resigned from the position of Sunday school superintendent owing toi ill-health. A varied programme was contributed by Miss D. Watts, Mrs. Aitkenhead, Misses M. Grindrod, T. Montgomery, Messrs. J. Smith, D. Whitburn and W. Sanderson. The Rev. J. F. Martin referred to the faithful service and sterling character of Mr. Whitburn, and on behalf of those present he made a presentation of two volumes. Other speakers were Messrs. W. Sanderson, school secretary, L. Watts and V. Hyndman. Mr. Whitburn suitably replied. The Mission Hall, which has been 111 existenco for about four years, is to be enlarged in tho near future. On Monday afternoon the first annual meeting of the Takapuna Women's Memorial Hall Trust Board was held, when Mrs. J. W. Williamson presided in the absence of Mrs. W. R. Wilson. The reading of the financial report showed a sound financial position, and an interesting report of the year's work was read by the lion, secretary, Mrs. 1. D'Esterre. The standing members, representing the Takapuna Women's Progressive League, wore re-elected, Mesdamcfi W. R. Wilson, J. W. Williamson, F. E. A. flunn, and E. E.Grim.wnde. Also present were: Mesdames J. F. Montague, ,T. Thompson, and Pcrscval, representing the Girl Guides' Association, and Mesdames Matthewman, McMurtric, E. C. Cutten, W. Lewins, T. B. Arthur, J. W.
