"IMPARTIAL."
CREDIT AND CURRENCY
FARMERS' UNION OPINION.
OPEN INQUIRY SUGGESTED.
"Tho word 'impartial' is the gist of tho whole matter," said Mr. S. N. Ziman, speaking this afternoon at the Farmers' Union Conference, in support of a remit advocating an inquiry into the currency system. The resolution moved by Mr. C. Frost (Darguville) read: "That this conference entreats the Minister of Finance to cause to be made an impartial and open inquiry into the credit and currency systems with the object of adopting the one most suitable for New Zealand conditions." "Any inquiry would do no good if it was instituted by such Governments as we have had for some time," said Mr. Ziman. "We have the idea that there is only one form of currency, but in England there are many publications which advocate other systems. These are never mentioned in the Press or in banking publications. That some change is necessary .we know."
Tho remit was passed. There were other resolutions the object of which, their movers stated, would bo fulfilled if the currency question were reformed.
One such stated that while the farmers had made gifts of stock and produce, they wanted to know the policy of the Government. It was unthinkable, said Mr. Rushworth, M.P., that there should be people condemned for ever to exist on what was given to them.
