RECORD RECOGNISED.
« WIZARD » SMITH'S NEW
FIGURE.
MILE DASH NEXT SATURDAY?
Cable advice has been received from the Royal Automobile Club, London, stating that Mr. Norman ("Wizard") Smith's 10-miie record of 104 miles an hour, established recently at Ninety-Mile Beach, has been confirmed as a world record. This is the first occasion on which a 10-mile record attempt has been timed by an electric apparatus. Officials of the Auckland Automobile Association interested in Mr. Smith's attempt on the world land speed record will leave for Ninety-Mile Beach to-mor-row morning. Advice from the beach this morning stated that Mr. Smith would attempt to smash the five-mile record between 11 and 12 o'clock on Friday, and would probably make his dash for the mile record of 253 miles an hour on Saturday.
On Sunday and yesterday Mr. Smith inspected the 10-mile course over which he expects to travel. With the exception of a small wash-out near the 13mile peg the beach was in fairly good condition. There were several wet patches, but Mr. Smith does not expect to be hampered by flying sand and water. The new revolving windscreen is reported to be working perfectly. The beach was smooth, and not as wet as might have been expected so late in the season. The Fred. H. Stewart Enterprise was unloaded at Awanui North yesterday morning, and was taken to the garage at Hukutere by special truck and trailer.
