ARATAPU AT PAPEETE.
MESSAGE FROM PURSER,
LONG TRIP FROM RAROTONGA,
The auxiliary schooner Aratapu, reported overdue, has arrived at Papeete from Rarotonga. A cable message, "All well," signed by Mr. C. N. Marden, purser of the vessel, was received by Mrs. Marden late last night.
Between Rarotonga and Papeete the Aratapu must have either encountered very stormy weather, perhaps a hurricane similar to that which drove her off her course en route from Auckland to Rarotonga, or else have gone out of her way to call at other islands in search of trade.
Thi? possibility was mentioned in letters posted at Rarotonga. Advice was also received from there that an engineer and two islanders had been signed on at Rarotonga to replace Messrs. J. Clarke, engineer, and D. W. Harles, cook, who left the ship to return to New Zealand. The Aratapu cleared Rarotonga on March 24, and, given average weather, should have reached Papeete, which is only 050 miles away, about a week later.
The secretary-general of the post office advises that a message has been received to-day from Papeete stating that the Aratapu arrived on Sunday, April 2-4, "All well."
