RECORD LOW LEVEL
WAIKATO RIVER FLOW. NAVIGATION IMPOSSIBLE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, Friday. The level of the Waikato River at Hamilton is now sft 3in below normal, in consequence of the lowering of the gates in the Arapuni tunnel yesterday. This is the lowest level on record. At the Hamilton pumping station water is being drawn from the river at the rate of 80,000 gallons an hour, which is sufficient to meet household requirements. Navigation on the river has been entirely suspended since the closing of the Arapuni gates. Arrangements are being made to transport goods wanted urgently at Hamilton by motor-lorry, but the bulk of the merchandise at Port Waikato will have to remain there until the dam at Arapum is filled and there is sufficient water in the river for navigation purposes.
