STIRRING SCENES AT DOMAIN. "SCHOOL'S" ANNUAL SPORTS. SPITTAL AND CHILDS CHAMPIONS. There was not a dull moment at the Domain yesterday, when no less than seventy-five events were run off during the course of the Auckland Grammar School's thirty-second annual spouts meeting. As many as eight heats, besides semi-finals, were required to be staged before the finalists faced the starter, so that actually there were 104 events got off before lunch, and 31 in the afternoon. While the attendance was nothing like it should have been, the spectators lacked nothing in enthusiasm, and there has seldom, if ever, been a more spontaneous outburst at the Domain than the applause which greeted F. E. Watt when he won the two half-miles (.under 17 and 16) from scratch, with one arm in a sling.
The senior championship cup was won by P. C. Spittal with 14 points (L. R. Currey was the 1931 victor). Spittal, who was junior champion last year, broke two records, the long jump open and the 100 yds under 17. In the long jump he covered the exceptionally fine distance for a schoolboy of 21ft Gin. Bradley was next with 12 points, and W. Roberts third with 10 points. In the junior cup contest G. Childs obtained 25 points, McCowan 13 points, and Sterling and McManus 6 points each.
Records broken were (the past holders and records being given in parentheses):—■ 220 yds, open, W. Roberts, 23s (F. G. Fraser, 1930, 23 l-ss); SSOyds, under 16, F. E. Watt, 2.13 3-5 (K. L. Warburton, 1929, 2.14); 880 yds, under 14, A. M. Ziman, 2.22 (J. B. Grant, 1931, 2.26 3-5); 440 yds, under 17, A. J. Sayers, 53 2-5s (A. J. Slyfield, 1930, 50s); 440 yds, under 15, J. B. Grant, 58 2-5s (H. W. McCowan, 1931, 595); 100 yds, under 17, P. C. Spittal, 10Vis (W. Roberts, 1931, 10 3-ss); 120 yds hurdles, under 16, G. Childs, 16 4-5s (D. G. Carnachan, 1930, 17s); long jump, open, P. C. Spittal, 21ft Gin (J. R. McCrystal, 1921, 20ft 2in); high jump, under 16, G. Childs, sft l%in (J. D. C. Hammon, 1930, sft); half-mile cycle race, open, I. O. Rossiter, 1.11 3-5 (I. O. Rossiter, 1931, 1.12); half-mile cycle race, under 16, J. N. Henderson, 1.48 (S. P. J. Jack, 1929, 1.17 1-5). Records equalled:—looyds, open, W. Roberts, 10 2-5s (J. N. Marsden, 1900, and H. C. Garlick, 1927); 220 yds, under 17, R. C. Clarke, 23 2-5 (A. J. Slyfield, 1930, and W. Roberts, 1931). J. D. Reid won the putting the shot contest, his distance being 35ft llin. Although better than the previous distance, Reid will not be classed as a record-holder as the contest has not been held for three successive years. Last year eight records were broken. Where all worked so royally to make the gathering the undoubted success it was, special mention must be made of the secretarial efforts of Messrs. J. Bishop and N. Nicholls (masters), and of their assistants, I. E. O. Rossiter and J. N. Thomson (students). Those good Samaritans, the Auckland Girls' Grammarians, again came along to dispense afternoon tea to parents, visitors anil officials. A word of praise Is due to the bright young men in charge of the results board, the numbers of the placed competitors often being hoisted before the judge's decision had reached the operators. Additional afternoon results (all finals) were:— CHAMPIONSHIPS. 100 Tarda Open.—Roberts 1, Clarke 2, Spittal 3. Time, 10 2-ss. 100 Yards, under 15.—Flett 1, Grant 2, Massey 3.
