LOCK AND ROAD.
—♦»- —— UPPER WAITEMATA SCIIEME. BIRKDALE TO HOBSONVILLE. The linking up of the mainland with the North Shore districts by means of a lock and roadway connection at Birkdalc is the objective of the Upper Waitemata Harbour Development Associa-
The president, Mr. Fred Morris, informed a general meeting of members last evening that he and the advisory engineer, Mr. F. E. Finch, had met Squadron-Leader Isitt at the air base, Hobsonville, and made an inspection of the locality at low tide. The best position for a lock seemed to be near Peace's Point on the northern side, and to connect from the road at Hobsonville, where road-making was an easy matter. The grade was good, and a concrete road should bo constructed. It was a simple proposition. An enormous quantity of stone would need to be carted there, but allowing £30,000 for the lock, Mr. Morris considered £100,000 would cover the whole scheme.
Messrs. F. Morris, G. Sutcliffe, E. C. Walton and R. Cole were appointed a deputation to explain the scheme and solicit support from various sources, including the Devonport Ferry Company, the Auckland Automobile Association, the Waitemata County Council, the Borough Councils of Devonport, Takapuna, Northcote and Birkenhead, the Helensville Town Board, the Kumeu Eatepayeiis' Association, and the Huapai Fruitgrowers' Association. These bodies are to be requested to appoint representatives on the executive.
