MATAMATA GOSSIP.
Gay Lap was working on the track this week, having fully recovered from the Paeroa mishap. R. J. Mateer's list of successes for the season now totals twelve, so that he is well up in the list of Auckland provincial trainers. His winners include Standfast, Gay Lap, Welcome Boy, Dark Marble and Lady Lulu. Gay Lap's younger full brother, Merry Lap, will have his first start at Te Kuiti. He has been given plenty of time and I does not look as though "he will be at his best till next season. He went a good gallop with Lucy Rose on Tuesday morning, but even so, does not appear a winner as he is still furnishing. It is .possible that Wee Prince will make his debut oyer hurdles at Te Kuiti. He has every, appearance of a "lepper," but has had very little schooling. In addition to being short of work Prince Val contracted a chill on the way down to the Ellerslie meeting. • In the circumstances his running was surprisingly good.
