RAILWAYS REPORT.
Freedom from Politics Urged In Australia. TOO MANY AUTHORITIES. CANBERRA, March 9. As a sequel to a recent conference between the railway and transport authorities, whose aim is to furnish recommendations for the co-ordinating of the rail and transport systems of the Commonwealth with a view to effecting sweeping economies and eliminating duplication, Mr. Heath, wlio conducted the investigation on behalf of the Commonwealth, has submitted a report. He urges, among other things, that the railways should be independent of political interference. Ho also recommends a drastic reduction in'the number of controlling authorities, and emphasises tho fact that the railways are over-capitalised, while financial statements do not disclose the true facts as to their operations.
The report admits that motor transport has had an adverse effect on tho railways generally. Particular reference is made to the unsatisfactory state of the New South Wales railways owing to "political meddling."
