NATIVE'S SALUTARY SENTENCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA, Monday. A particularly mean theft by a Maori named Timi Pihi was responsible for his appearance before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Police Court. The police said Pihi went to live with his grandmother and was given food and lodging. She became ill and wa« taken into the hospital. While 6he was away he broke into a box in which she kept funds belonging to the tribe, and stole £26. First he took £7 by opening the box with keys. Then he broke the box and took the balance. Ho was seen drinking about town and when charged admitted the offence.

Accused was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour, to be followed by three years' reformative detention.
