MORTGAGORS' RELIEF.
EXTENSION TO TOWNS?
CABINET CONSIDERATION,
CITY MEMBERS INSISTENT,
(By Telegraph.— Parliamentary Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, this day,
It is understood that one of the problems on which Cabinet spent long hours last week-end has been an extension of the mortgagors' relief legislation. There have been two enlargements of this Act since it was originated, the last amendment giving mortgagors the right of raising questions regarding their obligations, without waiting until tlie mortgagee proposed to take action for dispossession.
So far all protective measures have aimed at keeping on productive work those landholders who had a fair clianec of working their properties efficiently, but it is believed that the relief confined to farmer mortgagors will not adequately cover the position prevailing today. City members have been insistent that lessees of town properties are being driven to desperation by the onerous term of leases, and that legal procedure should be provided facilitating an adjustment, not only in regard to the leases of farm lands, but of other classes of property. It is not yet known whether the Government will take this further step, but the matter is under consideration.
