» "ROYALS'" THREE RACES. LORD BUBDISIiOE'S CUP WON BY NGA TOA. BEATS lORANGI IN BY A SECOND. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron held three races on Saturday in a steady southerly, -which gave the boats a fair test on all points. The principal event was the annual raoe for the cup presented by Lord Bledlsloe, which was won by Nga Toa after a good race, with lorangl second, the finish being quite exciting, Nga Toa, in the weather berth," getting the gun by a margin of one second. The second class competed for Mr. J. H. Prater's prize, which was won by Ladye Wilma. The M Class competed for Commander B. L. Berthon's prize, which after a good race was woii by Maroro. LOKD BLEDISLOE'S CUP. This race started at 2.30 p.m. The handicaps were:—Ariki scr, lorangi l*m, JNga Toa 2m, Prize 10m, Moana 10m, and Ida 15m From a good start Nga Toa, lorangi, Ida and Moana got away together at gunfire, Prize being 50s and Axiki 3m 50s late. The wind had been very light southeasterly for an hour before starting, but as the four bdats reached the line a steady southerly set In, which gave them some life, and leading jibs helped them on their way to the Bastion mark. Off the tide deflector Nga Toa had two lengths' lead from Moana, with lorangi holding a course more to leeward, followed by Ida, Prize and Ariki, in, this order. Rounding the Bastion mark, Nga Toa led lorangi by 4s, with Moaua lm 10s, Prize 3m, Ida 3m 10e, and Ariki 4m later. lorangi's crew were very quick setting their spinnaker, and she ran past Nga Toa before reaching North Head, where she had a lead of 50s, followed by the others in line astern formation. Ariki was now making up her time lost at the start. On the beat back to the Bastion I'rom the saltworks buoy near Ra.ngltoto not lorangi still had the lead. lorangi rounded Bastion at 4h 7m 355, Nfa Toa 4h Sm 355, Moana, l'rize, Ariki aud Ida in this order. The second time on the wind in from saltworks to Bastion Nga Toa passed lorangi and had 40s lead at this mark, lorangi steadily overhauling Nga Toa in the lead to the finish. The finish was : — Nga Toa, Oh 2Gm 535, lorangi fill 26m 545, Moana 5h 35m ols, Prize Oh 3Sm 325, Ariki Oh 36m 41s, Ida 5h 01m 345. HeBult: Messrs. Winstone Bros.' Nga Toa 1, Mr. Geo. MaeKenzie's lorangi 2, Dr. W. C. Burns' Moana .'!. THE FRATEK TROPHY. The second-class competed for a trophy presented by Mr. J. H. Prater, vice-corn-1 modore. The entries and handicaps were: Waione, Bcr; Ladye Wilma, llm; Kotiri, 2Jm; Windward, 4m: Wairiki, 7Jm; Kotuku, 14Jm; Janet, 15Jm. Waione was on the wrong side o£ the line at gunfire, and lost about a minute sailing back. Ladye Wilma was first away getting a flying start, followed by Wairiki, Kotiri, Windward and Waione in this order. Kotuku and Janet did not start. Ladye Wilma held the lead throughout the race, with Waione, Wind- i ward and Kotiri next. The finisli was : Ladye Wilma 5H 54m 6s, Waione 5h 05m 17s, ! Windward 5h 57m 525, Kotiri Oh 7m 245, Wairiki 6h 16m 275. Result: —Mr. N. H. Newcombe's Ladye Wilma 1, Mr. M. D. Grayson's Windward 2, Mr. R. J. Thompson's Waione 8. THE BERTHON TROPHY. The six M class boats which competed ; for the trophy presented by Commander E. L. Berthon, of H.M.s. Philomel, were all keen to get away. Mawhiti, which did well by keeping clear of the wharf, got away first followed by Manene, Manu, , Maroro, Matarere and Maratea. All net leaders for the Bastion mark. From here i it was a run with spinnakers to the white j light, In the channel, and a beat back to the i starting line. Maroro, Manu and Maratea kept too much to windward off Orakei wharf. Mawhiti, Manene and Matarere sailing a better course to leeward, and Miineno took the lead. Nearing the Bastion Maroro set her spinnaker, and ran off very fast, rounding the Bastion at Sh 28m ss, Manene 3h 29m, 15s, Matarere 3h 29m 255, Mawhiti 8h 29m 40s, Maratea 3h 29m 555, Manu 3h 30bi ss. creased her lead from Manene. On the beat back Maroro still led,. Alanene gaining a bit on her, and Marni third. The finish was: Maroro 4h 26m 455, Manene 4h 27m 325, Manu 4h 28m 13s, Matarere 4h 29m 30s Mawhlti 4h 30m 40s, Maratea 4n 31m 22a. Result: Mr. W. Ahlers' Maroro 1, Mr K. L.
