PAPATOETOE WELFARE LEAGUE.
.The Papatoetoe Welfare League lieid a meeting. on Thursday evening, the president, Mr. S. J. E. Closey, presiding. Silver Currency.—The chairman drew attention to the increasing amount of Australian silver coins in circulation in Auckland. It was decided to communicate with Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P., to ascertain whether the arrangement with the British Mint for the payment of 50 per cent of the profits on the minting of silver currency applied also to Australian silver.
Non-payment of Rates.—ln view of the difficulty experienced by many ratepayers in paying their rates this year, it was decided to submit to the Minister of Justice that the existing law. should be amended to give ratepayers the right to vote if their rates were in arrears. De-rating of Land.—The league decided to support a number of other suburban bodies in their movement to reduce the rate burden. It was stated that the present rates tended to check semi-rural settlement by placing an excessive burden on the occupier of a few acres. To bring about the necessary relief, it was contended, a system should be evolved of requiring a greater contribution from users for road maintenance, either by means of the petrol levy or a horsepower tax. In the vicinity of the railway line, it was stated, the rail travellers were at present paying; heavily for the maintenance of the roads which they seldom used.
