COLLAPSED AND SANK.

GIRL DROWNED IN RIVER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WHAKA.TANE, Tuesday. An inquest concerning the death of Irene Elsie Wilson, aged 16 years, who was drowned in the Whakatane River on January 23, was concluded before Mr. G. Brabant, the coroner, to-day. A sister, Joyce Wilson, said deceased walked into the river with her sister Jean on her back. Irene sank when in water over their heads. She appeared to double up in the water and did not seem to be swimming. Dr. F. Appleby stated that, owing to deceased bathing too soon after a meal, the shock was too much for the system, and she collapsed. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence.
