CHOKING WITH SMOKE.
MAN AWAKENED BY FIRE. FAMILY'S HURRIED ESCAPE. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.> WHANGAREI, this day. A hurried escape from a burning house in the early hours of this morning was made by Mr. George Pearson and his family, of Austin Road, Naunu. The house was totally destroyed. Mr. Pearson, who has recently acquired the lease of the property from Mrs. V. A. Murphy, late of Whangarei and now of Heme Bay, Auckland, went to bed at 9 o'clock last night, and was awakened at 1.30 choking with smoke. He rose quickly, and found the kitchen on fire. His wife and three children escaped in their night attire, and before long the six-roomed house was destroyed. Some bedding and a few personal effects were saved. Mr. Pearson had liis furniturj insured for £200 in the State Fire Office, and estimates his loss at £130. The house was valued at £900. The cause of the fire is not known.
