A verdict that death was due to drowning in an attempt to save the life of his friend was returned at the adjourned inquest to-day into the death of Thomas Hugh Eric Monro, manager of the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company. Evidence was given that Monro s brother-in-law, Mr. J. 1). Simpson, got into difficulties and Monro had gone to his assistance after dispatching a boy for help. The coroner, Mr. E. D. Mosley, remarked that it may be some consolation to relatives and friends that Mr. Monro lost his life in an endeavour to save the life of Mr. Simpson. Being only a moderate swimmer, lie knew he was risking his life, yet he did not hesitate to go to his friend's assistance.
