SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A farewell supper party at the Grand j Hotel was given to Miss Eve Gardiner, I of England, prior to her departure for, the South Island last evening. Beautiful flowers graced the table. Amorjr those present were: Mrs. Alan DonakiJ Mrs. Patrick, Misses Margaret Teunant., Hudson, Farrell and Menzies. There was an exceptionally pleasant gathering of children and parents staying at Cowes Bay 011 Tuesday evening. A fancy dress competition among the children created great interest, many pretty and original dresses being worn. After the judging of the fancy costumes, prizes were then presented to the successful winners by Mrs. R. I. Wilson. Various children's games were enjoyed, and a pleasant evening brought to a close with iiearty cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Insley, for the many kindnesses shown towards the welfare of the children staying at Cowes Bay.. * * * # A largely attended old-time dance was given by the social committee of the Star of Melrose Lodge, 1.0.0. F., in the Masonic Hall, Devonport, last evening. These functions have proved very popular with both old and young. During the evening a dainty supper was served ;>v the committee comprising: Mesdames W. Smith, Santo, Chambers and Misses Diver and Hale. Among those present were: Mesdames Whiting, Hartley, Santo, Dixon, Leece, Diver, Smith, New, Santo, Rowley, Gillanders, Gilmour, Whitley, Hill, F. Smith, Lockley, and Misses Parr, Glover, Waters, Gillandeis, Worthington, Briggs, Birss, Hart, Cusworth, It. Wilson, N. Hale, Flett, Marks, Cooper, Woodbury, Hicks (Cambridge), and Jackson. * » * » A branch of the women's division of the New Zealand Farmer's Union has been formed at Kerepeehi. A meeting of the ladies was called by Mr. W. Mclnnes, president of the Kerepeehi branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, and those who attended wove addressed by Mesdames Drinkwater and Hughes, president and secretary of the Waihi branch of the women's division of the Farmer's Union. The proposal to form a branch at Kerepeehi was enthusiastically received and the following officers were appointed: President, Mrs. I W. Sliilton; vice-presidents, Mesdames A. L. Fisher and E. Burling; secretary, Mrs. M. Pearce; advisory board, Mec--dames W. Mclnnes, A. Strong and R. Hill. It is proposed to hold meetings on the first Wednesday in the month at 1.30 p.m. * * * * An enjoyable evening was spent at the residence of Mrs. George Sowdcn, Tole Street, Ponsonby, 011 Monday in honour of her elder daughter, Mrs. Minna Spencer (nee Minna Hyman), whose marriage to Mr. Cecil Spencer, of York, England, recently took place. An excellent dance band was in attendance, and fully 100 guests were present. Dancing, interspersed with musical items, contributed to the evening's enjoyment, and cards were also played. A feature of the musical items was "Songs at the Piapo," given by Mrs. Spencer and her sister, Miss Bettie Hyman. A very dainty supper was served, and several toasts were honoured, tho speakeis beinp Messrs. Cecil Spencer, A. Fcllick, S, Braliam. and G. Rvan. The hostess (Mrs Sowdeir) received her guests in a black and white georgette gown. Mrs. Cecil Spencer wore white draped satin, and Miss Bettie Hymau a white crepe dc chine Basque frock.

The monthly meeting of the Tokoroa branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held on Wednesday, and was quite informal. Twenty-two women were present. It was decided to hold an "exchange day" for the next meeting. Mesdames Blain, Thompson, and Turner provided afternoon tea. Mrs. D. Hansen gave an enjoyable reception in the Peter Pan Cabaret last evening in honour of her sister, Miss Esther James, of Auckland, who arrived in the city yesterday after having completed one stage of her journey on foot from Spirits. Bay to the Bluff, in the interests of New Zealand-made goods. Vases containing beautiful blooms of summer flowers made the cabaret look charming, and the scene was further enhanced by a scheme of shaded lights which gave a restful effect during the dances. Mrs. Hansen wore a frock of ivory satin beautc, with slight train effect. In pursuance of her policy of wearing only New Zealand-made clothing, Miss James wore an evening frock of palest pink Canterbury locknit, with a deep berthe collar and pannier effect at the waistline, composed of two deep flared frills. Her shoes and stockings were also Dominion-manufactured. Among those present were: Mrs. L. Fisher (Rotorua), wearing primrose floral georgette, with panels; Miss Alma Cole, ivory satin embroidered in white beads; Miss Zilla James, deep cream frilled net frock; Miss Kathleen McLean | (Jnvercargill), leaf green georgette with gold lace embroideries; Miss L. Christie, palest pink georgette frock. Miss Eileen Fordo, shell pink chiffon;; Miss V. McCarthy, old gold satin with coatee in gold lame; Miss Ena Lester, citron crepe with shoulder posy to tone; Miss Marjorie Times, frock of blue toned floral chiffon; Miss B. Paltridge, leaf green satin with coatee of embossed chenille in green shade.
