Tennis Champions.
WILDING SHIELD MATCHES. Auckland v. Canterbury. — Carnival Opens To-morrow. Tennis enthusiasts will have nothing to complain about regarding the bill of fare for the next ten days, for at Stanley Street during that period there will be staged two Wilding Shield matches, one contest for the Nunneley Casket, a Test match between New South Wales women and New Zealand, and the Dominion championships. The programme is:— Thursday and Friday.—Wilding Shield semi-final:* Canterbury (C. Angas, H. A. Barnett, D. F. Glanville, T. W. Patterson) v. Auckland (A. C. Stcdman, E. L. Bartleet, N. G. Sturt, M. M. Morrison). Saturday and Monday.—New South Wales (Mrs. Molesworth, Misses U. Valkenburg, N. Hall, J. Hartigan, N. Lloyd), v. New Zealand (Mrs. H. M. Dykes, Misses D. Nicholls, Marjorie Macfarlane, B. M. Knight). Wilding Shield final: Wellington (N. R. C. Wilson, D. G. France, A. L. France, E. A. Roussell) v. winner of Canterbury-Auckland match. Monday to Saturday (January 30).— New Zealand Championships. The titleholders are:—Singles: A. C. Stedman and Mrs. H. M. Dykes. Doubles: C. Angas and I. A. Seay; Mesdames Melody and Well wood (nee Miss M. Myers, Wanganui); I. A. Seay and Miss M. Andrew.
The Nunneley Casket match between Wellington and Auckland will be played next week and possibly Monday, February 1. The teams will be:— Wellington.—Mies D. Nicholls, Mrs. H. M. Dykes, Miss D. Herve, Mrs. D. G. France (nee Miss Brady). Auckland. —Misses Marjorie Macfarlane, B. M. Knight, J. Ramsay, Mrs. E. Napier (nee Miss B. Witherow). The overseas visitors will arrive in Auckland by the first express to-morrow and, during their stay in this city, will be billeted by members and officials of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association. The Canterbury team for the Wilding Shield competition arrived by the first express to-day and are staying at Arundel. The manager is Mr. P. B. Harman, of the Christchurch executive. Matches for the Wilding Shield will commence at 1 o'clock each day. The visiting teams will be entertained at morning tea by the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association at Messrs. Milne and Choyce, Ltd., to-morrow. Miss Dulcie Nicholls arrived this morning. Mr.. G. N. Goldie (formerly national secretary) and his wife arrive to-morrow niorning for the carnival. Other well-known tennis enthusiasts already here are Mf, F.vO. Austin (auditor of the N.Z.L.T.A-) and his wise (formerly Miss C. Stevens, a Wellington provincial champion). Mr. D. M. Kean, the New Zealand secretary, arrives tomorrow morning, and the Wellington shield team on Friday. Auckland v. Canterbury. The draw for the Wilding Shield semifinal, Auckland v. Canterbury, tomorrow afternoon is:— 1 p.m.—Bartleet v. Angas, and Morrison v. Glanville. •. • . 2.15 p.m.—Stedman v. Barnett, and Sturt v. Patterson. 3.45 p.m. —Stedman. and Sturt v. Glanville and Patterson, Bartleet and Morrison and Angas and Barnett. The pairs arranged to represent New Zealand in the Test against the Australian ladies are:—Mrs.' Dykes and Miss Knight; Misses M. Macfarlane ami D. Nicholls. Miss Macfarlane will captain the New Zealand team.
