IN THE PROVINCE. In the first match of the season for the Waikato Banner (sub-associations), Waikato East team, drawn from the Matamata district, defeated Morrinsville, at Morrinsville, by 17 matches (IGS games) to 7 matches (132 games)'. The first round of the Lawrence Cup matches played at Herrlesville on Saturday, resulted in a victory for Te Aroha against Thames by 11 agmes to 2. Thames forfeited two matches owing to the indisposition of S. Danby. For the Piako "B" Cup, Rawhiti defeated Waitoa by 7 sets to 6, the losers, however, having the advantage in games (S5 — 7S). At Te Awamutu the staff of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Comp-any played a side from the head office at Hamilton, the visitors winning by 16 sets (129 games) to S (104 games). In the Thames Valley inter-club contests on Saturday, Paeroa beat Hikutaia. At Turua the home sides (A's and B's) were far too good for Ngatea in the Hauraki Plains competition. Other games in this series resulted in victories for Kopuarahi (over Waitakaruru) and Patetouga (over Kerepeehi). At a championship tournament for the best players from schools in the Franklin district twelve boys and 12 girls competed, and in each case the Otaua representatives secured the championship title. Porter winning in the boys' division and Miss J. Guerney in the girls'.
