A SCHOOL'S PROGRESS.
SERVICE TO EDUCATION. HEADMASTER AT BELMONT. MR. R. HARRISON RETIRING. After 19 years or service, In which the school under his charge has grown from one accommodated in three rooms to one of some 600 pupils, Mr. Rupert Harrison, headmaster of the Belmont School, Takapuna, is to retire- on Saturday. There will be a farewell ceremony in the school grounds. The growth of the school is closely connected with the faithful service rendered by Mr. Harrison. The children were at first accommodated in the Pres- ; v ■ _-___ byterian Church, in
lt>l3, while a school ■ of three rooms was being built. These were finished in August of that year and Mr. Harrison was appointed headmaster iu February. Iu the same year, the roll number was 60, aiid there were two assistants. Today there are nearly, 600 pupils and 14 ..a ssist ant s. The school, in its organ-
isation, ;is something ■of a model for primary institutions throughout the Dominion. In 1919 three rooms were added, while three years later a queen carnival "was held to raise money to buy and to improve the existing , , infant school site. The sum of nearly £100 was raised. Then in 1924 an infant school of four rooms was added. Mr. T. Leitch was the chairman of the school committee for the first six years and for the past four years. Mrs. F. E. N. Gaudin has been a member of the body for 16 years.
