FIVE KILLED, AIR MAIL TRAGEDY. Dutch 'Plane Crashes in Siam Take-Off. AUSTRALIAN'S ESCAPE. (United F.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 11.30 a.m.) SINGAPORE, December 6. The Dutch air mail 'plane overturned when leaving Donmuang, Siam, on the way home from Batavia to Amsterdam. Five persons were killed. Colonel H. C. Brinsmead, Director of Civil Aviation in Australia, who was travelling in the Dutch 'plane as a result of the wreck of the AustraliaEngland Christmas air mail machine ai Alor Star, 11 days ago, suffered concussion and broken ribs. His condition on Sunday night had improved since the morning. The 'plane failed to rise from the ground and struck an embankment. A wheel came off, and the machine overturned at Paddy Field. Air-Commodore Kingsford Smith, in the Australian relief 'plane Southern Star, arrived on the scene at noon. He refuelled and hopped off for Rangoon, taking Colonel Brinsmead. The latter is now in Rangoon Hospital. AIRMAN KILLED. Fatal Attempt on World Air Speed Record. CRASH IN" FLAMES. . DETROIT, December 6. An airman, Lowell R. Bayles, of Springfield, Massachusetts, was killed yesterday when his aeroplane struck the ground and burst into flames while he was making an attempt on the world's air speed record for a land machine. A few days ago he attained a.speed of 281.9 miles an hour. SMITHY'S PROGRESS. TWO TRIPS FOR MAIL. (Received 10.30 a.m.) SINGAPORE, December 6. Air-Commodore Kingsford Smith spent Friday night here and left for Rangoon at 6 a.m. yesterday, where he arrived later, stopping at Alor Star. Owing to the softness of the ground due to rains between Singapore and Rangoon and the consequent difficulty of taking off with _a heavy load, he will probably divide the Southern Sun's Christmas mail from Australia and New Zealand and make two trips from Alor Star to Rangoon, after which no trouble is expected. .. HINKLER DELAYED. BAD WEATHER ENCOUNTERED. MADRID, December 6. The Australian airman, Mr. Bert Hinkler, is detained by bad weather between Madrid and Paris.
