BOWLING.

PROGRESS ON SATURDAY. MATCHES HINDERED BY RAIN. SUMMER TOURNAMENTS IX VIEW. , (By TRUXDLER.) A beautiful afternoon made the bowling conditions almost perfect on Saturday. ■bright sunshine disposing of any ill 'effects •which might otherwise have followed the rain in the early morning. However, the deluge that followed the peals of thunder soon after six o'clock has probably iput some of the match committees in a very awkward position, for the late afternoon was being utilised on most greens for hurrying on the club competitions, particularly the singles. This had become all the more pressing on account of the rain having completely prevented play on the previous Saturday, so those who had postponed tor a week the closing day for any round would find themselves again in an equally unfortunate predicanient-

If match committees keep strictly to their time-table, the players who have been caught by two wet days -will consider they ihave a grievance. If they allow another week's grace, the players who have gat through their matches will claim that preferential leniency has been accorded to those who procastinated, thereby delaying the whole tournament. What is a match committee to do, in an honest attempt to run off the matches punctually, with fairness to _all? Only one practical suggestion "has been put forward that will apparently meet all i.ases, and that is to make the closing day for all rounds a Friday, and not a Saturday. The effect of this would be-to induce all the slow players to get off their matches on the previous Saturday. If then they got caught by the rain, as has been the case on the last t two Saturdays, they would still have five afternoons to play, after work if necessary, and probably never yet in Auckland, during even "the wettest season, has every afternoon in-a week been too wet to play. Any who delayed [playing, when there were still five afternoons after the last Saturday, could not ifeel hurt if they found themselves given a loss. Matches on Saturday. The only functions out oi the ordinary run were the reunion of old members at Rocky Nooik and the open ing oi the ""•baby" club of the centre, Kaukapakapa, for the season. Most of the foundation members of Rocky Xook were present, and some oif them played in the official rink against the president, Mr. R. E. X , - Matthews, while other old members intluded Mr. G. A. Jackson, who was president in 1913, and who came specially from Otorohanga to meet his old friends. They -were all very cordially welcomed by Mr. Matthews, and responses were made by some of the old-timers of 1901, Messrs. John Bouskill, John Jenkin, B. A. Kayes, George Hatcher and F. J. H. Ellisdon. The Kaukapakapa official opening was a very enjoyable function, carried out with every sign that the club.is entering upon its second season with the certainty of success. With a croquet lawn alongside the bowling green, the club promises to be a social centre in a flourishing neighbourhood." Tihe visitors included most of the Auckland Centre executive, a rink from Grey Lynn, and players from all the adjacent clubs, and they were •warmly welcomed iby the club president, Colonel McKenzie. The centre executive accepted an invitation to break their return journey by epending the aright at Helensville, and during the evening they were entertained by the members of the local club at a game oi indoor carpet ■bowls.

It may not ibe generally known that special interest attached to the meeting of Rawkiti and St. Helier's on Saturday, sis it was the first leg in. a triangular jnter-club between three eastern suburban clubs, in which they all play their full strength. As a matter of fact St. Helier's chose 14 rinks, but this was too much for RawMti so .two were rejected by ballot. The second round will be a fortnight later, December 12, when Rawhiti will meet Ellerslie, and the final round on February 33, when Ellerslie will play St. Helier's. A pennant has ibeen presented for this eompettiion, to he iheld each year by the winning club. People are very fond of talking about all the "young fellows'" who are now taking on the old man's game, but these would !have some difficulty in explaining away one rink engaged in this match, representing St. Helier's- The names will i>e found in another column, and the whole four young fellows in Mr. Cahill's rink are grandfathers] Coming Tournaments. The centre executive very thoughtfully postponed the_ closing date for the open singles till this evening, for the weather during the previous week-end was anything but suggestive of a tournament that requires fine weather for artistic play. When the names of "the competitors are disclosed, however, it will probably be found that the clubs most heavily represented will be those in which two or three enthusiastic members interested themselves in inducing their friends to enter, in the same way as most clubs find that their own open tournaments can only be filled by making a persona] appeal to likely competitors. This consideration will make it difficult to estimate to what extent the entries have been limited by the high entrance fee, 6/ being apparently a stiff fee for one day's play, in comparison with 2/6 to 3/6 for any one of the 157 open tournaments on the programme for this season. Nobody would suggest that the fees should not cover expenses, for no good sports would like their enjoyment to be paid for by other people, and that is what a loss ">=»'iLd really mean. However, bowlers collectively might just as well learn to run things economically, in the same way as they do individually, and if a tournament of this kind cannot be run for less than 6/ it might be advisable to borrow Mr. Downie Stewart's economy axe and see if any expenses can be cut down. Entries for the Dominion tournament, to commence in Christchurch on January! 11, will close next Saturday, so they must be posted on Thursday at the very latest. The secretary of the Xew Zealand Bowling Association, Mr. W. G. Brass, has circulated a list of the hotels in Christchurch, with their tariff rates and accommodation, and all the other necessary information is in the books of entry forms, so it is to be hoped that a few rinks will go from Auckland. Entries for the Auckland Centre's Christmas tournament, to commence on Boxing Day, close on Wednesday afternoon of next week.
