Match Race. — J. Oakley 1. Homer crashed. 'kilmister beats mattson. WELLINGTON, Sunday. The official opening of the Wellington speedway season took place at Kilbirnie Stadium last evening before a good attendance. The weather was line and cool. The main event, the invitation race, between W. Kilmister, who has just returned from England, where he competed with conspicuous success, and A. Mattson, the Auckland rider who has also had considerable experience on the English track, was won by Kilmister. Two riders, A. Radcliffe and 15. Appleyard, received head injuries necessitating their removal to the hospital. Appleyiml soon regained consciousness, but Radcliffe this morning was semi-conscious. Results :— Speedway Grand Opening Handicap.— V. Phillips (4s), 1; W. Kilmister (scr), 2. Time, 8S 3-ss. „ Special Invitation Match Races, Kilmister v. Mattson. —Kilmister won both runs, Mattson pulling out during the first one. Emergencies Scratch Race. —Hethcrington 1, N. M. Stone 2. Time, 09s. Grand Consolation Handicap. — Gower (3s), 1; 11. Mangham (Is), 2. Time, 925.
