How They Ran.

Opening Favourite Unplaced. Tui Mint and Kind Words were the only withdrawals from the Melrose Maiden Handicap, leaving a. fine field of 20 to. contest the event. When the machine closed most confidence was placed in Star Lap ( £314), Lucidus ( £246) and Knight of Australia ( £227). The investments on Amber Link were £148. Lady Derision threw her rider at the barrier and Regardez failed to move off. When they settled down Marmorate was in charge from Knight of Australia, Silene, Royal Gallant, Daycoma, Star Lap, Hawthorn and Lucidus. Racing for the top, Marmorate was still in front from Knight of Australia, Star Lap, Silene, Lucidus, Royal Gallant, Daycoma and Amber Link. At the straight entrance Star Lap went to the front and was followed by Lucidus, Marmorate, Knight of Australia, Amber Link and Royal Gallant. Over the concluding stages Lucidus put in his claim and won by half a length, Amber Link being a neck in .front of Knight of Australia. Then came Star Lap, Bugle Call, Silene, Daycoma and Click Claqk. Public on the Mark. ' Bronze Tray, Great Emblem and Royal Action were not saddled up for the Tiri High-weight, and .the public went solidly for Heremia (£683). The next in order of betting were Tarporley (£329) and Hit. the Deck (£247). Principal was a good outsider with £63 m his chance. Heremia and Principal were first out from Neil, Hit the Deck, The Jack Jumper, Bizarro and Luminary. Going along the back Heremia and Principal were racing abreast from Hit the Deck, Neil, Luminary, The Jack Jumper, Bizarro, Dominican and Stonelienge. Heremia and Principal were still on terms when the top was reached, being followed by Dominican, Patutahi, Neil, Hit the Deck and Bizarro. Turning into the straight Principal was still holding his own with the favourite, and then cams Neil and Dominican together, Hit the Deck and Patutahi together, Tarporley and Bizarro. Once .into the running Burgess called on the favourite, and he finished on well, beating Principal by a length and a half, with Neil a length further away. Tarporley was fourth, followed hy Hit the Deck, Dominican, Bizarro, Patutahi, Wiltshire and Ruby Dawn. Paganelli Just Pails. The horses that did not parade for the Borough Handicap Vandyke, Flying Prince, Royal Artist, and Helium. Of the twelve that lined up at the barrier Chrysology was accorded favouritism with £7SB, Vali (£557) was second choice and Paganelli . (£528) third. Paganelli was first away from Vali, On Top, and Werata. Along the back stretch Paganelli was at the head of affairs and then came Chrysology, Lady's Boy, Royal Ruler, Vali, White Wings, Lla'nore, Cynthia N., and Sir Mond. As they crossed the top, the order was Paganelli, Chrysology and Lady's Boy, together, Vali and Royal Ruler, together, White Wings and Cynthia N., together, and Sir 4 Mond. Paganelli hit- • the straight first .from Chrysology, Vali, Lady's Boy, and Royal Ruler. Iri the run to' the' judge the favourite wore Paganelli down and got the- verdict by a neck, with Vali a length and a quarter further away. White Wings finished in fourth berth, followed by Royal Ruler, Lla'nore, Lady's Boy, Cynthia ST., and Sir Mond. After the race an inquiry was held concerning some interference between the three placed horses a--few yards from the post.
